About the LORI Grant Program

LORI Grants are offered by the Office of Library and Information Services as subgrants funded through its federal Institute of Museum and Library Services grant under the Grants to States Program supported by the Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA).
The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) is the primary source of federal support for the nation's libraries and museums. IMLS advances, supports, and empowers America’s museums, libraries, and related organizations through grantmaking, research, and policy development. The IMLS vision is a nation where museums and libraries work together to transform the lives of individuals and communities. To learn more, visit www.imls.gov and follow IMLS on Facebook.
ARPA Funds Modernize, Expand Technology in Libraries
[October 8, 2021] The Office of Library and Information Services recently awarded over $520,000 in grants to public libraries using American Rescue Plan Act funds allocated to OLIS through the federal Institute of Museum and Library Services. All of Rhode Island’s 48 public libraries applied for and received grants to fund technology purchases that will enhance digital access and programming for remote and onsite users by providing up-to-date computers and additional technology. Over 500 computers (desktop and laptop) were purchased, along with computer peripherals such as monitors (traditional and touchscreen), waterproof keyboards and mice for easy cleaning, charging stations for computer equipment, and printers. Other eligible items purchased included tablets, audio-visual and conferencing equipment for remote and hybrid programming, smartboards, and specialized equipment for library operations. In total, over 1,400 pieces of equipment were purchased to assist libraries and the communities they serve in responding to and recovering from the coronavirus pandemic. Libraries will be making the new equipment available to the public throughout the fall.
Maximum grant awards were determined through a formula that considered population, number of outlets, and poverty levels based on the State of Rhode Island’s identification of distressed communities. Libraries serving communities with a population under 10,000 were eligible to receive a base grant of up to $8,000; libraries serving populations over 10,000 were eligible to receive a base grant of $10,000. Libraries with branches were eligible to receive up to $2,500 for each additional outlet, and libraries in distressed communities were eligible to receive an additional 25% of the total award. Distressed communities include Central Falls, Cranston, North Providence, Pawtucket, Providence, West Warwick, and Woonsocket.
