Summary
NLS is releasing version 4.0 of BARD Express this week.

This release is light on new front-facing features; however, it is considered a major release because the program has been converted to a 64-bit program and has been updated to use the BARD 2.0 API.

Following are the release notes for BARD Express 4.0:

 Updates:

  • BARD Express now supports Windows 10 and 11.
  • Has been tested with the three latest versions of JAWS and NVDA at the time of this software release.
  • Has been converted to a 64-bit application.
  • Has been upgraded to use the latest BARD API.
  • The user License Agreement has been updated.
  • When opening a book series that has more than 50 titles, only the first 50 titles will display by default. Choosing the Next button will display the additional titles.

 Bug Fixes:

  • While a book or magazine is downloading, BARD Express now properly gives the download percentage.
  • Now correctly defaults to displaying 100 items on the Wish List if installing the program as a fresh installation.
  • If updating from an earlier version of BARD Express, the previously configured number of items shown on a person’s Wish List is retained.

 Known Bugs and Limitations:

  • BARD Express is a 64-bit application. If the user’s Outlook email client is 32-bit, the action to send a diagnostic report as an email will fail. Instead, choose the button to copy the report to the clipboard, and paste the text into the body of a new email message, sending it to the BARD support team at NLSDownload@loc.gov
  • If you are reading a book in the BARD Express player that was converted from analog to digital and choose Next or Previous within 15 seconds of loading the book, the program may crash. This will be addressed in a future software update.
  • In this version, the BARD Express player does not play books with the DBG and DBM prefixes. This will be addressed in a future software update.
  • The BARD Express player may have difficulty playing books that were in the first run of the conversion from analog to digital format, that are long, and that do not have more than the three standard navigational points.

 How to Get the Update:

If a previous version of BARD Express is installed on a PC, and if BARD Express has not been opened in the last 24 hours, the program will present a prompt for the update the next time the program is launched. If that previous version of BARD Express has been run within the last 24 hours, a person can get the program by opening the Help menu and choosing Check for Updates.
